C'tan - Necrontyr Relations My Lord,
I must admit to you right now, this report is pure speculation, especially as we have not
yet been able to detain and interrogate a 'live' Necrontyr, much less one of the elusive
C'tan. However, I have researched this subject a lot in the past few months, and feel I
can form a few hypotheses on the relationship between the C'tan and the Necrontyr.
First, let me review some of the reports I have received concerning possible sightings of
the C'tan. All of the sightings have left one witness still alive, though I cannot imagine
why. I believe it may have something to do with the Necrontyr's seeming fascination
with twisting the psyche of other races and using it against them. We have certainly
seen the tactic of leaving one man alive to spread fear used to great effect by the
Adeptus Astartes, and it is possible that the Necrontyr are using the same technique. In
many sightings, the C'tan have a different form from those recorded, leading me to believe
the C'tan can take any form.
The forms chosen by the C'tan are quite startling. In one sighting, an Adept viewed a
floating spirit that closely resembled the fabled 'Grim Reaper', a cowled skeleton
carrying a large scythe. The scythe was swept across the Biologis team, leaving all of its
members dead save the lone witness. In another sighting, the C'tan appeared as a large
glowing skull, which screamed in rage and destroyed the Biologis team investigating its
pyramid in a blinding flash. In yet another incident, occurring on Huron, the C'tan took
the appearance of an 'angel', a handsome winged man carrying a flaming sword that was used
to strike down an entire team of Biologis Adepts. In all cases in which we have been
able to investigate the bodies of the dead Biologis members, they all appeared to have
been burned by an intense heat, starting from their brains and culminating outward. This
suggests to me that the 'weapon' used by the C'tan is just part of an elaborate show, and
that the men were all killed by an intense psychic backlash.
The Grim Reaper, skull, and angel, as well as many more recorded forms that C'tan have
used, all have one thing in common. They are images associated with death, or the
afterlife. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Necrontyr themselves are made up to
look like instruments of death.
After reviewing more field reports, testimony, and hieroglyph translations, I believe I
have found the link between the C'tan and the Necrontyr. Though this may sound mad, bear
with me.
The C'tan appear to be deities of a sort, almost gods, if they are not indeed gods. Such
creatures could be viewed by many societies, even highly advanced civilizations, as the
God(s?) of Death, beings of power associated with the shedding of the mortal body and
ascendancy to the afterlife. Continuing with this theory, it is entirely possible that the
Necrontyr were given an offer by the C'tan. This offer included sacrificing themselves, as
well as every other living creature in the galaxy, for a chance to be immortal, living on
after death. With the metal bodies and stasis chambers prepared for the Necrontyr, their
continued existence was assured. In the space of a few decades, centuries, or possibly
millennia, the galaxy's life was wiped out and the Necrontyr placed their minds inside
metal shells. How this was achieved I cannot yet be sure, but I have a feeling this might
explain the mystery of the sudden disappearance of all life in the galaxy sixty million
years ago.
I have consulted with other Magi on this matter. Corvus still disagrees with the idea that
the Necrontyr were able to transfer their conciousnesses into metal bodies, but Reed is
open to this possibility as well. I would like to work with him further to study this
hypothesis, and also in the collection of more information regarding the C'tan.
Your obedient servant,
Magos Biologis Urieth Malkar |
