Gazing At the Night Sky
Kim Winters laid back on a grassy hill, one she was very familiar with. She
stared up at the stars above her, feeling a deep longing inside.
Her fiancé, Paul Coffey, was out there someone. He'd been drafted for the
military. No choice in the matter was given, but Paul didn't complain. In fact,
he seemed to be happy to have the chance.
Kim rolled onto her side and began running her hand along the grass. It was as
cool as the night she and Paul had gone on their first date.
"Can you hear me, Paul?" she whispered.
She felt a flood of memories, all of them so wonderfully happy. Their first
kiss, shared up on this hill. So many times watching the stars, gazing as lovers
do and talking about finding a lovely world to set up a home on. Their first
time making love, not caring if someone caught them. So many carefree times.
A breeze swept through, rustling through her hair. It reminded her of the way
Paul would run his hand through her hair, telling her how beautiful she looked.
Kim looked back up at the stars and whispered, "Do you still remember me,
Paul? I hope you haven't forgotten me, or your promise to come back and marry
me."
She tried imagining how Paul was, where he was. Images of a thousand possible
scenes all came at once. She imagined Paul hurt badly and dying slowly on some
nowhere world. She also pictured him finding some girl on some exotic planet,
making love and giving her all the kisses he should save for Kim.
She shook her head, trying to clear those negative thoughts. Paul was better
than that. He wouldn't break his promise, be unfaithful.
But even knowing that couldn't quiet her fears.
